Join us and Harlem Grown on Saturday, May 24, from 12 to 5 p.m. for a free, all-ages celebration of food, gardening, and community!

Enjoy cooking demos with Harlem Grown’s Mobile Teaching Kitchen, community planting, free starter plants and seeds, kids’ goodie bags, art workshops, and food justice and education sessions. And, back by popular demand, another pickling workshop and dialogue with Tonya Hopkins, aka The Food Griot!

Black Visionaries: Visionary Frequencies of Technology, Creativity, and Black Futures

You’re invited to Black Visionaries: Visionary Frequencies of Technology, Creativity, and Black Futures, a special activation of our commissioned augmented reality mural, Black Visionaries, by Nona Hendryx and Dream Machine Studio.

The legendary Nona Hendryx will host the evening, featuring a dynamic lineup of guests and collaborators, including Craig Harris, LaFrae Sci, Carl Hancock Rux, For The People, Maya Georgieva, and Sam Mejias. Together, they’ll lead a night of sonic and communal exploration rooted in Weeksville’s five foundational pillars: Oasis, Self-Determination, Creativity, Stewardship, and Land.

Tribute to the Ancestors for BAM DanceAfrica

Join us at Weeksville Heritage Center on May 17th at 10 am for Tribute to the Ancestors, part of the DanceAfrica Festival's 2025 Program presented by BAM. Alongside our esteemed cultural partners—the DanceAfrica Council of Elders, MoCADA, and The Billie Holiday Theatre—we invite you to join us for a day celebrating the cultural richness and artistry of Mozambique

 [IF…] Iterative Fictions

Join us on Friday, April 25 from 6–9 PM for (Iterative Fictions), a multimedia performance by artist Eto Otitigbe. Using materials from the Weeksville archives, the project reimagines the Black Archive through sculpture, sound, and projection.
Featuring an original soundscape by Zane Rodulfo and visual projections by Dakota Ray, explores the cultural memory of Central Brooklyn and the possibilities of Black futures.

Session 4

On April 24, @summerschoolradio’s deep listening series returns to Weeksville Heritage Center for its fourth installment. The evening begins at 6 pm with a grounding sound bath by Kia Islam, followed by an intimate live set from Lovie with sound amplified by Karlala Soundsystem. Expect a space for listening, reflection, and collective presence.

Moving through Cry: Meditations on Judith Jamison’s Legacy

Tickets are live! Join us on Thursday, March 27th, from 6:30 to 9 PM for a night of movement, memory, and celebration honoring the legendary Judith Jamison. Dancer and choreographer Kendra J. Bostock along with dancers Brittany Grier and Candace Thompson-Zachery will present a newly commissioned piece inspired by Cry, the iconic solo Alvin Ailey created for Jamison in 1971. Following the performance, Kendra will lead an interactive session, guiding us through some of the signature movements that made Cry so powerful. No dance experience needed—just bring your dancing shoes!

Through Fabric & Frame: Faith Ringgold, Lorraine O’Grady, and the Black Feminist Gaze

Join us for Through Fabric & Frame, a daylong exploration of Black feminist artistic traditions through the works of Faith Ringgold and Lorraine O'Grady. Enjoy a family-friendly reading of Tar Beach and art-making session, a quilting workshop inspired by Ringgold, and a discussion of O'Grady's Olympia’s Maid. Photographer Laila Annmarie Stevens will lead a photography activation, reactivating O'Grady’s Art Is... series. Timed sign-ups are required for the workshop and portrait sessions.

Dinner and a Movie – Going To Mars:The Nikki Giovanni Project

Tickets for our Dinner and a Movie night are live! Join us on Friday, March 14th, from 6–9:30 PM for a screening of Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, an intimate portrait of the People’s Poet, Nikki Giovanni. The evening will include a poetry and bookmaking workshop with OlaRonke Akinmowo, founder of the Free Black Women’s Library. Guided by OlaRonke, we’ll explore DIY bookmaking and Giovanni’s use of Black vernacular in her poetry. Dinner will be catered by Just Soul with a selection of soul food.
